MEPCO Rates and Tariff Calculation

MEPCO (Multan Electric Power Company) distributes electricity to homes, shops, and industry across South Punjab. The per-unit rates it charges are set by NEPRA, not by MEPCO, and are the same across all the former WAPDA distribution companies. This page shows the current domestic MEPCO rates and explains how your bill is built from them.

These figures are from S.R.O. 279(I)/2026, the government notification of NEPRA’s tariff for 2026. We last checked them against that notification on 17 September 2026. Rates change when NEPRA issues a new tariff, so always confirm against your latest bill.

Protected vs Unprotected: Why It Matters Most

The single biggest factor in your rate isn’t the amount you use, it’s your status. You’re a protected consumer if you used 200 units or less in each of the last six months. Protected consumers pay much lower rates and keep the benefit of the lower slab on their first 100 units.

If you go over 200 units in any single month, you become unprotected for that bill, and unprotected consumers are billed at one rate on every unit, the rate of the band their monthly total lands in, with no lower-slab discount. That’s why crossing 200 units can raise a bill sharply.

MEPCO Unit Rates for Protected Consumers

These rates apply if you used 200 units or less in each of the last six months. The rate is telescopic, so your first 100 units are charged at the lower rate even if you use more.

MEPCO Unit Rates for Unprotected Consumers

These rates apply if you used more than 200 units in any of the last six months. Remember that every unit is charged at the single rate for the band your monthly total reaches.

Lifeline Consumers

Lifeline consumers pay the lowest rates: Rs 3.95 per unit up to 50 units, and Rs 7.74 per unit up to 100 units. They pay no fixed charge, but a minimum monthly charge applies (Rs 75 on single phase, Rs 150 on three phase). Lifeline status is for single-phase connections up to 1 kW that have not used more than 100 units in any of the last 12 months.

Fixed Charges Explained

Since 2026, domestic bills include a fixed charge based on your sanctioned load in kW, shown as “San Load” on your bill. It’s separate from the per-unit cost, so it’s there even in a low-usage month. Lifeline consumers are exempt. The fixed charge per kW rises with your consumption band, as shown in the tables above.

What Isn’t in the Unit Rate

The rates above are the energy cost only. Your final bill is higher once these are added:

  • Fuel price adjustment (FPA): a monthly figure set by NEPRA that can add to or reduce your bill. See our FPA guide.
  • Quarterly tariff adjustment: a revision applied for a set period.
  • F.C. surcharge: a small per-unit charge toward power-sector debt.
  • GST at 18% and, on higher bills, income tax and electricity duty.

Because of these, a final bill is often 40% to 55% more than the energy cost alone. To estimate yours, use the MEPCO bill calculator.

New Connection Charges

For a new connection, MEPCO issues a demand notice after your application setting out the security deposit, meter charge, and any connection costs. These are NEPRA-approved and depend on your connection type and load, so the exact amount comes on your notice. The security deposit can be refunded when the connection is closed.

Net Metering for Solar

If you have a rooftop solar system, net metering lets you export surplus electricity to the grid and receive credit against the units you draw, which lowers your bill. You apply under NEPRA’s net-metering rules with the required documents. The rules and the rate at which exported units are credited are reviewed by NEPRA from time to time, so check the current terms before installing, as they affect how quickly a system pays back.
